Bio: He was the son of Dr. James William Quarles of Corry,PA and Margaret Colony Quarles of Greenwood. The husband of Kari Quarles.He attended Byrnes High School in Spartanburg where he was a member of the Marching Band and was a graduate of Emerald High School in Greenwood where he was active in the Air Force,Jr. ROTC Program.He attended Piedmont Technical College and was a graduate of th SC Criminal Academy and the SC Detention Academy.He was a Deputy with the Laurens County Sheriff's Department and was a member of the department's Honor Guard.He was a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church in Greenwood and served as Scout Leader of Explorer Post #2008 in Laurens. |
Bio: Deputy Scott Quarles began his law enforcement career with the Laurens County Sheriff’s Office on November 13, 2000 at the age of 19. He performed various duties from clerical to civil process and worked in the Detention Center while waiting for his opportunity to become a certified Laurens County Deputy Sheriff. Deputy Quarles was certified by the SC Criminal Justice Academy as a Class I Officer on January 25, 2002 just a few days after his 21st birthday. He was finally legal age to carry a pistol and had the certification to back it up. He worked at Gray Court Owings School as a School Resource Officer and finally went to the Uniform Patrol Division where his heart was after his tour of the school. Scott also volunteered his spare time by working with the youth of the Sheriff’s Office Explorer Program as well as being a member of the Sheriff’s Office Honor Guard and assisting in numerous community functions such as Kid-Prints, Festivals, Career Days, Safety Fairs and many, many more events. He even played taps on his bugle at a 9/11 memorial for his community that he loved so much.
Deputy Scott Quarles was a focused man who knew what he wanted and achieved it. A young life that achieved much and gave much. |

Summary: |
Deputy Joseph Quarles was killed in an automobile accident while responding to backup a deputy at the Laurens Speedway concerning a fight.
He was traveling on AB Jacks Road when his vehicle went out of control, struck an embankment and overturned. Deputy Quarles was transported to a local hospital where he succumbed to his injuries at around midnight.
