Constable Gerald Fortis was on duty in Chilliwack, BC and had arranged to travel home to begin his break so he could watch his 3 young children open their presents. En route in his patrol car, he encountered a patch of ice and his vehicle skidded into a cement barrier. His seat belt and the airbag were not enough to protect him because of the angle of the impact. He died from multiple injuries.
