Summary: Deputy Sheriff Bill Butler was shot and killed while assisting another deputy with a traffic stop near the intersection of Beecher and Lamb Road in Jefferson Township around 2:30 p.m.

Deputy Butler Jr, acted as backup for another officer, a detective sergeant, who recognized a driver as having active arrest warrants and performed the traffic stop on Beecher Road near Lamb Road in in Jefferson Township, southwest of Hillsdale.

The passenger of the vehicle refused to identify himself, but the officers identified him as 34-year-old Jonesville resident Eric Michael Fiddler, who also had two arrest warrants.

After the driver was taken into custody, the officers attempted to arrest Fiddler, but Fiddler removed a gun from his waistband, shot Butler and ran into a wooded area.

Deputy Butler was transported to the hospital where he succumbed to his wounds.

Disposition: The subject was found about two miles away several hours later. When he fired on troopers, they returned fire, killing the subject.
